Steven Machamer B.Mus. , M.Mus. (Juilliard)

Mr. Machamer studied percussion at The Juilliard School from 1975 to 1980 and holds the Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees. His primary teachers were Saul Goodman, timpanist with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, and Elden Bailey, percussionist (also with the N. Y. Phil.). While at Juilliard he was awarded several scholarships for high achievement including those named for Saul Goodman, and The Juilliard Alumni Association. Concurrent with his last three years of formal education Steven received a fellowship grant from the National Orchestral Association where he was appointed Principal Timpanist/Percussionist in 1979. This institution provided valuable training through the reading of 158 major works for orchestra during 192 rehearsals with prestigious guest conductors, and 15 public concerts at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. From his graduation in 1980 until arriving in Sydney in 2001, Mr. Machamer remained a busy orchestral musician in New York City. Steven participated in a countless number of performances with the American Symphony Orchestra, Little Orchestra Society, New York City Symphony, NY City Opera, Metropolitan Opera, NY City Ballet, Solisti New York, The Jupiter Symphony, NY Pops, Hudson Valley Philharmonic, Long Island Philharmonic, New Jersey Symphony, Stamford Symphony, Opera Company of Boston, Virginia Symphony, Spoleto Festival (both USA and Italy).
Since 2001 Mr. Machamer has performed casually with the Sydney Symphony, the AOBO, and is on staff with the Sydney Conservatorium. Mr. Machamer has also performed with early music ensembles on baroque kettle drums in the USA with The Grande Bande, New York Early Music Association, Amor Artists, Millennial Arts Production, and with the Sydney Philharmonic Choirs, and other Sydney based choral groups.
He has recorded for many record labels including Composers Recording Industry (CRI), Sine Qua Non, Angel, EMI, Newport Classics, the Australian ABC, commercial jingles and television, cable television, and documentaries. He is composer of works published by C. Alan, and Permus Publications. His vibraphone transcription (and CD) of a suite for lute by J. S. Bach is available through Honey Rock publications. His 1990 Ashlar Records production of a CD featuring baroque transcriptions of chamber music for piano, violin, and vibraphone received a glowing six paragraph review in Percussive Notes magazine, the leading scholarly journal for classical percussionists. In the popular field Mr. Machamer has performed in well over two dozen musicals on Broadway, as well as occasional tours throughout the USA, Canada, Germany, Japan, and Australia. Steven has also provided lively percussion contributions on several CDs and videos for The Wiggles, Australias top earning entertainers.
