St Catherines School offers a dynamic and comprehensive music programme for students from Kindergarten through to Year 12. A strong tradition of music education in the classroom, commences in Kindergarten, through the Junior School where students have music lessons and also participate in a Band programme.
The strong music curriculum in the continues into the Senior School with an emphasis on the integration of academic music studies in the classroom, co curricular music and private music lessons. A strong enrichment programme caters for gifted and talented students. In Years 7 and 8, girls study the Concepts of Music in mainstream classes and every girl learns an orchestral instrument in their study on Instruments of the Orchestra. Girls are streamed into theory classes to cater for ability and understanding of the rudiments of music.
The school boasts seventeen large and small ensembles which operate on a continuum and progression basis. Girls are monitored regularly on their instruments and are encouraged to become members of one or more of these ensembles. Talented musicians are accelerated where appropriate. Each ensemble performs regularly in assembly, concerts, Senior Music Evenings and at the end of each year Family Evening, Carols and the Annual Breaking Up as well as community events, Eisteddfods and competitions and on interstate and overseas tours. Music soloists are given numerous opportunities to fine-tune their performance skills through concert performances, soirees and recitals, masterclasses, workshops, and Eisteddfods. In recent years, St Catherines has had an impressive record of Encore nominations and performances at the Sydney Opera House in all the components of Music.
